“The life and writings of Steven Eli Esquibel, whose Indian name translates into Hummingbird, represents the traditional American-Indian path of spirituality and life, which he has pursued as his avocation and vocation for the last 20 years. The author was born in San Diego, California, and raised in a small agricultural community and one of the seventeen Indian reservations in San Diego County. He moved to Arizona ten years ago. In 1981, he immersed himself in traditional American-Indian activities and was appointed speaker for the American-Indian Elders Society of San Diego County in 1982. The group is dedicated to preserving traditional beliefs and protecting sacred sites. At the age of 32, he became the youngest person in their history to hold the position of speaker for the esteemed society. Mr. Esquibel-Hummingbird has dedicated his life to the path of traditional understanding and utilizes his academic and cultural background to further that path of life through his writings. In 1998, he received the Famous Poet Award by the Famous Poets Society of America.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Steven Eli Esquibel (HUMMINGBIRD = Tismal): Tismal's works demonstrate the Traditional Native American Path of Spirituality which has also been his lifelong "vocation and avocation." A Native of San Diego County, BS in Mass Communication from UC San Diego. Masters of Arts in Human Behavior from US International University of San Diego. He also pursued and all but completed his PhD in Community Development from MIT but ran awry of the Review Board there after nearly completing the program. He was driven to acquire the capability to assist Native American Communities with programs and implementations to increase THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITIES. In 1981, Tismal moved forcefully into full Native activities and away from main stream economics. Tismal was successful in these matters and became The Speaker of AMERICAN INDIAN ELDERS SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. It was comprised of TRADITIONAL INDIAN LEADERS who represented the Reservations of SoCal. The society's mission was to keep the True Native Traditions alive in The Native Communities... and Tismal became the youngest Tribal Elder of all known history at Age 32. Since, Tismal = HUMMINGBIRD ... has dedicated his entire Life to the PATH OF TRADITIONAL UNDRSTANDING AND KNOWLEDGE and uses his advanced academics to further the Mission!
"Who Am I?
A person will never be
greater than they dream
as hard as they strive.
All should be encouraged
to dream great
and strive hard.
For in the end
as we stand before the mirror of our lives
it is not what we have
or title we bear
that we are made to see,
but what we have done
with what we have been given.
--Hummingbird"
THE SPIRIT LIVES FOREVER. In 1981, Tismal-Hummingbird was tribal administrator for the San Pasqual Indian Reservation in San Diego County. He administered and was responsible for the administration of the education programs there among other duties. Each year, the representatives would all gather at a national conference. This year was in Denver, CO. Three days of conferences was followed by a Powwow. Tismal though was uncomfortable for some unknown reason and did not want to participate....oddly. He declined events and invitations and sought solitude and quiet. The events began with the Flag ceremony, drummers and singers, ... a round dance...or circle dance ensued. Tismal usually loved these ceremonies but now cringed and left suddenly! He went to the hotel and was joined by two Native Elders in the lobby for inextricable reasons at the time. They explained how the Powwows were now a defilement of Great Spirit, with drugs, sex, drinking, and more. THE CEREMONIES ARE ABOUT RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GREAT SPIRIT. These ceremonies were a defilement they told him which finally explained his intuitive dislike for them. THE GOOD NATURE objective of the Ceremonies was not present in the current Powwows... but the opposite. It was bad medicine and Tismal had been right all along! The Elders directed Tismal to a Sacred Mountain where for thousands of years, Natives have gone to reconnect with Great Spirit and get their true purpose. They would go and fast for three days there, never take anything from there, and Pray for Knowledge and direction. The Mountain reveals that we have lost nothing but our way to know it. THE SPIRIT OF ALL IS NEVER LOST. Tismal found what he was looking for! Then, one of the elders explained how he had been in the NASA space program and had given one of the astronauts a Hopi Indian Mud Head figure to leave on the Moon's surface. They all three laughed and mused that the little doll would likely end up being found and would be proof that Natives are actually from The Moon!
In 1979, Hummingbird was working at Rincon Indian reservation in N. San Diego, CA. He was finishing up the PhD at MIT as well. A grant was won and paid for him to research American Indian communities. At that time, the federal monies were coming from the Department of Health and Human Services. The purpose of the grant was researching and developing 20 social service programs for various American Indian communities. The main emphasis was on children's services. The social and cultural conflicts were causing the funding and 'support' to be meaningless and without any positive impact...rather, a negative one! This was when the American Indian communities began to develop their own social services programs. The child welfare needs were being addressed by taking away American Indian children...from their families AND tribes altogether...and without further contact...ever at times. Many called it "cultural genocide' and this helped get the funding for Hummingbird's programs. Hummingbird also set up national conferences....where a common location would be shared to voice issues for American Indian communities in one place. They would seek to unravel problems, concerns, solutions, and experiences....with each other. This was set for Denver, CO, and would be the third destination on a Journey for Hummingbird...a journey that just landed in his mind...through these strange urges and impulses. These impulses also caused him not to fly to Colorado but to saddle his PU and camper shell and drive out...inexplicably...Hummingbird honored these strange feelings and drove out to three destinations, the last of which was Denver. Firstly, he went to The Grand Canyon and camped. The canyon was remarkably beautiful. It energized Hummingbird. As he left the GC, he felt compelled to pull over and did. He then found a freshly road killed RED TAILED HAWK. He mused that the mode of human of freedom...the automobile... had killed the Messenger of freedom... the MODE HAD KILLED THE SYMBOL. Hmmm. The conflict between human and nature presented itself. He removed the wings, still fresh and supple and took them with him as he continued the journey. He searched his Soul for the cause of him pulling over and finding this freshly killed Hawk and in taking his wings. He took also the talons and thanked the Hawk and bid The Hawk Spirit farewell. He drove to Painted Desert and was once again .... was compelled by the beauty there...of the Lands. He passed then into Ignacio, Colorado...where...he found his people whom he had not informed of his arrival ....to be out. As he drove up the road, he saw and suddenly felt compelled to ask...a Native American Man walking on the side of the road... where his Friends might be... These compelling urges and impulses...which had taken over his directional guidance by now...often seemingly conflicted with his own feelings and logic...but When he asked the young man where his friends might be, inexplicably he knew and directed him to a white wooden house where many had gathered nearby. Hummingbird followed the impulses... and felt in a surreal and detached reality the whole time for it... and when he reached the house he came to understand that the people were gathered to say goodbye to a young American Indian man who had been killed by a drunk driver. recently... Hummingbird began to truly sense the Cuase and reason for his urges and strange guidance and realized that all had been pre-ordained to connect the dots of the Hawk, The Man, and Hummingbird's journey. Hummingbird used the urges and complied with feelings only as he removed one feather for each person in the gathering. Hummingbird noticed the3 GrandMother now and she bid him continue. He did not tell them that he had apparently met both the young man who was killed and The hawk that would represent that man... Hummingbird gave the last feather to The GrandMother. deaths seem to occur without meaning or purpose... but they are ordered and ordained perhaps by a "logic"...a "conscious" that defies human reasoning... The Young Man and The Hawk had fulfilled their purpose in Life...which was to illuminate how our world would have tragedies like this until we once again took RESPONSIBILITY for our world. IF WE ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO FACE THAT THESE DEATHS HAVE TO DO WITH THE MANNER IN WHICH WE LIVE .. THEN PERHAPS WE CAN DERIVE A MEANS TO REDUCE THEM. Hummingbird asked that all Honor The American Indian's Life now with ACTIONS on behalf of the message they would receive by his Death. Hummingbird said that we could give thanks instead of grieve now... and to follow the message's intentions...which they did...and Drunk Driving Programs came into being there! So many died before the cause of alcohol... and now, there would be a push back. HUMMINGBIRD asked himself...when would the young Hawk ever be put to rest? Hummingbird has since attended many similar funerals...and always the same question arises in his "Mind's Eye"...
THE TRUTH You cannot save anyone who does not wish to be saved. You cannot make anyone see who does not wish to see. You cannot make anyone hear who does not wish to hear. You cannot make anyone believe who does not wish to believe. You cannot make anyone pray who will not pray for themselves. You cannot bring light where light does not exist. For if one tries, then one is meddling in The Great Spirit's domain and one shall suffer his rebuke. For the Great Spirit has set forth the life and lessons of each and every person, and we should not tamper with that which the Great Spirit has set forth. Therefore, do not stop, alter or delay the life and lessons of those you love, but rather, help them understand and see the life and lessons before them. ~ Hummingbird
"We are shown the path of life. Yet, we choose the way of death. And all I can feel is sorrow for us, raise my head and voice upward and ask, WHY? Has life, truth, love, and caring become so meaningless to us? Has The Great Spirit, peace, and happiness become such a dream to us? Has death, lies, hate and greed become so important to us? That evil, war, grief, and strife have become our only reality. And all I can feel is sorrow for us, raise my head and voice upward and ask WHY? And when the sun has set on all of our lives, and the agony and terror of our darkness sets within our spirit, for the needless and wasteful path we chose, and we cry for forgiveness and mercy, all that will be felt for us is sorrow. And a question to us... was it worth it? - Hummingbird
CIRCLE OF UNDERSTANDING - The most basic foundational concepts in the American Indian culture were THE CIRCLE and to LIVE IN BALANCE. The two as an integration provide the direction for American Indian life and cultural evolution. They might seem disparate on the surface, yet are found in EVERY American Indian culture across the lands! As one COMMONALITY, the fundamental aspect of BALANCE AND HARMONY IN THE CULTURE is presented and the means with which they lived in HARMONY WITH NATURE and in their INDIDUAL LIVES. The CIRCLE ... represents the natural flow... the CYCLICAL NATURE of THE NEVER ENDING LIFE CYCLE... where all things are connected... no life stood alone... no act alone, but all connected... through a purpose...that was individual yet common and was HARMONIC. INTERRELATIONS OF ALL. Affectation was seen as comprehensive...that all things interconnect and interreact... to CO EXIST ... IN HARMONY with all NATURAL LIFE, ENVIRONMENT, ONE SLEF, AND THE CREATOR OF ALL LIFE. All Life was viewed as being part of Creator...GREAT SPIRIT. The people strived to live in balance with Nature and hence with all things, and hence, with Creator. The early euro encounters thought the Indians to be savage, paganistic, and/or undeveloped... but in fact, these people and culture were highly advanced and had a life flow that corresponded with the universe. The intactness of the circle and balance conceptology for the Indian cultures assured that they would develop harmoniously. It was not utopian, so to speak though, but the social ills of 2022 simply did not exist in the natural cultures of The American Indians.
The traditional framework of American Indian cultural communications was oral... by the passing of stories...as "history, knowledge, experience, and understanding" ... was/is also passed by such as drawings, such as in sand paintings, pottery, rock paintings, and ... MEDICINE WHEELS. The Circle Diagram with concentric circles and the Life in Balance diagram asserted as an overlay of the Medicine Wheel or CIRCLE OF UNDERSTANDING. The tool teaches balanced living! It provides visualization ...to see how and when one comes out of balance and why... for Spiritual and Mental healing ... for RECLAIMING BALANCE IN LIFE... based on the American Indian way of living a balanced life. In viewing the diagram, we imagine that the concentric circles are over layered upon each other and that they have MOVEMENT. The circles are also equal in size and circumference and rotate around each other...appearing as one constantly rotating circle if viewing from the top. There may be infinite #'s of points around the diagram like a western timepiece which specifies for attunement and ALIGNMENT purposes. The PRIMARY CIRCLE represents GREAT SPIRIT and EARTH ... and NATURE. Also...herein ...is found NATURAL LAWS... that govern the Earth its Life and the Ecologies. These are all in the One circle because they are all seen as One. The belief is that ALL revolve around this... to be in balance and harmony... and as the MAIN FIXED POINT of the energetic diagram... to which all the other circles may align for BALANCE AND HARMONY. Circle 2 is representative of OUR SPIRIT. Our sense of Oneness... as part of something GREATER THAN OURSELVES... which is OUR ACTUAL NATURAL ESSENTIAL EBING... OUR NATURAL ENERGY ...our INNER BEING AND VOICE. This circle is closest to the Inner circle and always remains connected to GREAT SPIRIT CIRCLE IN THE CENTER. This aspect is eternal like the Great Spirit circle. The third circle is the MIND... our conscious thoughts and feelings. Ideas, dreams, rationale, and emotions. This circle is next to the first two because it gives the ability to comprehend the first two and then to seek to live out as a reflection of them in our own expressive countenance or way ...in development of Circles 4, 5, and 6! Circle 4 is Physical Communication such as language, other forms of communications, and their MEANINGS AND INTENT. The Fifth is Representative of our PHYSICAL BEING... with our actions, deeds, mannerisms, and movements. The 6th circle is represents the human built world... the human developments... such as laws, economics, societies, institutions, technologies, cities, which HUMANS HAVE BUILT UPON THE EARTH. these items have been generated by human thought, their words, and their actions. It is the furthest from Great Spirit and lives the shortest time and is the least important. This circle Depends on all the others for its GROWTH, CHANGE, and SURVIVAL. These 6 circles also have 6 points above them which describe 6 PRECISE ALIGNMENTS and are intended to provide a means of living in alignment with the 6 circles... GREAT SPIRIT at center... GOD, EARTH, NATURE... so to LIVE IN BALANCE WITH ALL AND PRIMARILY WITH ONESELF... and hence leads one to be able to live in BALANCE AND HARMONY with UNDERSTANDING to then develop a reflective assimilation in Life in the form of one's Spirit, thought, words, actions, social economic political and physical development ...that reflects the Inner Most Circles.
The circles have been drawn as aligned to demonstrate the conceps. In reality, there exists GREAT MISALIGNMENT. In truth, if the circles were drawn here as they are today in the world of huimans, they would show DIRECT MISALIGNMENT. Therefore, the middle circles would be misaligned particularly. Many traditonal American Indians view the world as just that...DIRECTLY MISALIGNED. It is known that this will cause grerat catastrophes that shake the house opf cards of misaligned reality and cause it to fall so that it can be rebuilt. Also, the same People will see all disease and dysfunction as emanating from this misalignment. There is a constant conflcit and dilemma in the lives of the People becuiiase they must choose a true Spirit existence OR wordly life...and this is becuase wordly life is so far removed from alignment with Spirit. Human beings being human may attempt to live in BALANCE WITH GOD, NATURE, EARTH, .... or ...... live in the worldly way created that is 180 degrees opposed to them. The choice again is presented becuasse we have let our world be driven by worldy ways insteead of Spirit. We build our worldy ways and we have mis-built them. In viewing the CIRCLE OF UNDERSTANDING we can recognize that OUR HUMAN SPIRIT is part of the PRIMARY CIRCLE. This portends to the fact that if we choose worldy affairs over Spirit, even if worldly success is achieved, there will no REAL WEALTH. A Spiritual Void occurs within us... the oppsite of success! The UNFULLFILLMENT, UNHAPPINESS, DISCONTENT, IMBALANCE, AND FEELING OF LESS THAN WHOLENESS are all directly atrtributable to the misalignments. It is WE who choose the misalignment to the Inner Circle... and even if 4 of 6 are aligned, if the Primary Circle of SPIRIT is not aligned with, all will fall by the wayside. AMERICAN INDIANS can see that all of the c=societal issuesaa re brought by this inner misalignment and its outward expression thereafter. Therefore, HEALING is often simply about bringing a being back into ALIGNMENT. There may be infinite numbers of ways and degrees by which MISALIGNMENT may ocur... such as thoughts and words in balance with Spirit but actions not. There are again multiple and many ways that misalignment can exist. The DAILY INTERACTION OF LIFE ... may have many compromising distractions and conundrums to offer... but the equation is really... just four part: SPIRIT, THOUGHT, WORDS, & ACTIONS. Shakespeare's "TO BE OR NOT TO BE" is played out daily in this equation by all... TO BE IN BALANCE OR NOT TO BE ...WITHIN THE CIRCLE OF UNDERSTANDING
THREE ABSOLUTE RULES OF LIFE 1. Great Spirit has brought each and all for a PURPOSE. 2. Only the Great Spirit knows this PURPOSE. 3. The Great Spirit cannot reveal this PURPOSE to one...unless that one can keep their MIND & HEART OPEN TO GREAT SPIRIT at all times. One achieves REVELATION OF ONE'S PURPOSE from THE GREAT SPIRIT "through prayer, belief, trust, faith, fasting, and meditation." The PURPOSE become one's CENTER. Once established, one never feels lost in life. FOREVER the CENTER PURPOSE acts as a COMPASS in one's LIFE, and directs one "through the decisions of Life."
HAPPINESS AND LIFE. Be Happy with who you are ... and you will be happy with Life ...whther its good or bad ... whatever life offers ... We "be" the best person that we can be within ourselves ... and Happiness is always nearby! - Hummingbird
PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE. Tismal apprenticed with The Indian Elders or "Traditional Leaders," in San Diego, CA. As Dr Steven relates the terms 'Elders," and "Traditional Leaders," he means to say they are the ones who carry the responsibility for the PRESERVATION of TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE and PRACTICE ... ("Wisdom Keepers" is a descriptive phrase that Tigre El uses, btw ...").
Tismal-Hummingbird realized that he would need other types of knowledge than the non Indian education at MIT and other western universities that he had gained in order to "feel complete as an Indian person." He felt he needed to learn the Ways of American Indian Tradition to blance and truly understand the world and the self. He found that indeed his Life came together in ways he had never imagined. His worldview came to clarity and he came to know his place among the PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE... AS ONE within himself. He became enhanced by coming to know himself across time and gathered his purpose in Life. He came to know his place in the Universe and in Society. American Indian Medicine long since had acquired the "knowledge and understanding" of "The All" which is a part of a "larger universal order," that transcends time. He gaiend the knowledge to be able to "see, understand, and pass this knowledge on to each individual in the tribe..." Many have heard of "VisionQuest" and "Rites of Passage," ...which is where a medicine person passes the knoweldge to an individual within the tribe. Often, Tismal reminds, the sand paintings were used to "depictthis information," and show "The Way." The pictorial sands would relieve what today is prevalent ... a "great questioning," of, "WHO AM I?" and "WHAT IS MY LIFE ABOUT?" ~
..." existing only to see, nothing more, nothing less. " As Tismal sensed all the descriptions, thoughts and feelings, he realized at the time that the experience could not go into words. Later, he would try to express the experience in words but also COULD NOT at that moment in time. In a split second, all was released. ...energy flowing ...he observed himself looking back down at himself on the bed from his perch on the ceiling. He could then see himself both hovering above his body and his body on the bed. He knew within that this was no mirror image but an actual view. He became present...simply a part of what was there ansd occuring. He had entered another level of existence ... a level of existence that allowed both consciousness both of one's self and the what was going on. It did not allow for personal feelings...thoughts...actions... for affecting the reality...just observation and inclusion.
Hummingbird next experienced a VISUAL EVENT that occured ...within a "time frame" ... but was timeless somehow. The "outer being" had begun to transform into a great red tailed Hawk! The feeling he experiecned was well beyond description in words... but "sensation" might be close. As the bird, he experienced both rthe sensation of flyiong but the awkwardness of learning how as well. As the Hawk then, his consciousness returned to him in full...no longer split between physical body and outer being...but one again...now as the Hawk in Flight. His eyesight become both 'wide angle" and "zoom" and he gazed upon the terrain of SoCal and then into Mexico he flew... and further South. Baja Mexico and a dense jungle formed before his HawkEyes... and an immense overgrown stone building beneath an overgrowth of foliage was spotted. The stones were cut amazingly...perhaps impossibly from a physical human point of view. A voice resonated communications to him and lead him to the building but then sent him back allowing the understanding that humanity was not ready to know this place. The information...was something the humankind was not prepared to handle...yet. Suddenly he flew back to Southern California and re-entered his physical bidy...and sat up. He had regained total control of his consciousness...and re-transformed back into "Tismal" ...The Hummingbird Man.

Raising into this Realm through Gianni’s Lifestream, a local “me” after all, we found it necessary to game plan and take fortitude from the Universe to even the playing field. Practically, Gianni sought Mentor after Mentor whom he found then, and incepts in the now as well, offer Wisdom as Service without demand of recompense besides a commitment to ...strength, he will call it. They did not require Gianni’s fealty, and yet, receive it in Gold. And, as is American Indian custom, we receive, integrate, and pass forward all Wisdom and StrengthEnergy. Hence, when Dr E came upon Dr Esquibel, he was already acquainted with the Mentor/Mentee gauntlet… whereas Gianni would jump and whirl kick in his youth like Bruce Lee, jab like Muhammed Ali, he would also gather his collected Mentors and Guides within now to emulate the Great Warriors of The Elder Wisdom of The American Indians. Most of Dr E’s Mentors also speak so and such of their Mentors … and Ceremonial Prayers are sent again...just now and always… to The Elders that came before him… that gave so that he could stand in that Light ...and so ...he does. We do not promise The Elders our commitment of a Life of Service ...we are that Life. We are the dutiful echoes of The Ancestors … now and ever more. Thank you.

I have a spotted Eagle feather ...now! "It symbolizes rebirth, dawn, spring's direction, and renewed life for us. The eagle significance is particularly characteristic of new beginnings, resilience, and stamina for those who have been experiencing difficult passages in life." I also ride alongside a young Eagle or two in the Wilderness Refuge here near Pit River tribe and XL Tribe lands. They seem to find me interesting and fly near me...look at me...on my e bike. I go 20 MPH at times...maybe they like my speeds!?
The Young Eagle I rode with yesterday ...on my long loop .(..I tell you what... my loop was so big I was scared out there! LOL. ...Would I make it home? Haha! The e bike charge only goes 20 or so miles!) who came and "parlayed" with me was older than some others I've seen. His tail was 50% bright white...and his white was showing on plume and throughout his wings with a bright contract of snow and earth colors. Likewise, the mountains here had two different snow caps with blotches of white appeared and spoke ... one a red and white and the other a dark brown and white...both of which remind of the Appaloosa's and Paint Horse's rump which has saved Earth so many times! What? It is Hinhanni ...Great Spirit's Daughter ...that saves us. He so loves Her and Her beauty and aliveness so touches Great Spirit's Heart that another Spring is granted us. Yep...ever wondered why Native Women are so beautiful? They are The Beauty that stakes us...that gives us claim and rise for another Spring!!! MIGHTY "LENTICULAR" CLOUDS ATTENDED THE SKY OVER OUR DANCE. It is so, and so I say!
